This weekend is going to be another busy one. Two of my brood are taking part in a twelve-hour music marathon on Saturday to raise money for the Horn of Africa appeal while on Sunday we are mooching along to our local Apple Day.
Apple Day has become a yearly event after being launched by Common Ground in 1990. It falls on October 21st every year and there are many events countrywide around that date celebrating the delicious fruit, orchards and local distinctiveness.
Ours’ promises Apple Pressing (using the local communal press), Apple Tasting (trying some unusual and traditional varieties), Storytelling, Hot Food, Snacks and Cakes, Music and Stalls as well as lots of lovely Games (apple bobbing, rolling peeling and the Biggest Apple Competition!)
I’m sending Bonus Boy up into our trees to select some fruit so we can have them identified. One of our trees produces eating apples so big they are a challenge for one person to eat and they have become known as ‘sharing apples’!
In celebration of the pomme I am planning a slow cooker veggie sausage, apple and chestnut casserole to warm our cockles followed by tarte tatin and cream (all of which will be appearing on Monday’s post to coincide with my slow cooker review and giveaway!)
There will also be some apple printing in warm autumn colours and, if the weather holds, we’ll be clearing the veg beds of their summer left overs and popping in a selection of cabbages and some purple sprouting broccoli.
What are you up to this weekend, will you be getting fruity?!
I am feeling very autumnal and would love to have a look at your autumnal crafts/recipes/family friendly days out! If you have blogged about them please leave a link below if you haven’t (or – gasp – you don’t blog!) please tell me all about it in the comments section instead. Old posts are very welcome so trawl back through your archives for your favourite autumn post and give it an airing! If you could pop a link back here in your post, I would be very grateful and you can grab the badge if you fancy!
Halloween is almost upon us and next week’s SFTW will have a ghoulish giveaway so get crafting/making/doing and come back to link up then too!
