Elf on the Shelf

Hello and welcome to the first Festive Friday Linky of this year! This week I’m having a think about advent which is approaching at speed; my daughter is doing a ‘countdown to advent’ and we may actually have to have an Advent for Advent in November next year!

We have been ‘doing’ Christmas as a family for 16 years now and we have some very entrenched traditions but this year I am trying one which is new to me. Many of you will already know about the ‘Elf on a Shelf’ but I hadn’t come across it until I bumped into it on Pinterest last week and I suspect it will be new to many of you too.

Elf on the Shelf originates in America where he appears for Christmas and watches over children, delivering a nightly report to Santa and making his ‘naughty or nice’ register a reality rather than just a song lyric. Each morning he is discovered in a new pose, sometimes causing a little chaos, sometimes just looking a little sheepish, sometimes sleeping off the night before in a shoe.

I am not a fan of the ‘you only get Christmas presents if you are nice in the run up’ school of thought but I do like the idea of him reporting all our Christmassy goodness to the Big Man! I am VERY keen on finding out what that naughty elf has been up to while we have all been sleeping. My teens are now Magic Creators and they have excellent imaginations (as does Mr TS) so I have set them the task of coming up with places to put him and things he has done and DG and BB will be able to look for him every morning throughout advent and report his antics to the ‘Elf Daily’. He will be making a snow angel in the icing sugar and drawing moustaches on family photos but the rest has to be seen to be believed, watch this space!

I have one minor problem…I haven’t yet found an elf. If you know of a place where I can buy an elf which fits into small places, has arms long enough to wrap around small objects and with a cheeky little face please let me know!

Are you doing something special for advent this year? What festive frippery have you been up to this week? What have you got planned? I want to know it ALL! You can find out more about the Elf on the Shelf tradition here. Have you had an Elf on your shelf? What did he or she get up to?

If you have a Christmas blog post old or new to share do pop it on the Linky below and have a look at what everyone else is up to while you’re there! I’d really appreciate it if you would pop a link back here in your post and help to spread the word. If you would like an invite to the Festive Friday group Pinterest board leave your Pinterest handle in the comments and I’ll sort it!
