  • 75 g/? cup Soft Brown Sugar
  • 75 g/? cup Caster Sugar
  • 125 g/½ cup Butter at room temperature
  • 1 Egg at room temperature lightly beaten
  • 175 g/1½ cups Plain Flour
  • 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 100 g/? cup Plain Chocolate Chips
  • A Cocktail Stick To make the spiders not to go in the cookies!


  • Preheat your oven to 190°C/375°F/Gas Mark 5
  • Lightly grease two baking sheets
  • Cream together the butter and sugars using a free standing mixer with the paddle attachment (or by hand with a wooden spoountil light and fluffy
  • Add the beaten egg and mix thoroughly
  • Add the flour and the bicarbonate of soda and thoroughly combine
  • Add most of the chocolate chips, keeping a few back to make the 'spiders'. Mix in well.
  • Spoon dessert spoonfuls of the mixture onto your trays leaving gaps between each heap, the cookies will spread
  • Top each cookie with three or four of the reserved chocolate chips
  • Bake for 10 -12 mins until golden
  • Use your cocktail stick to drag legs out of the chocolate chips while they are still melty, four on each side!
  • Leave to cool a bit on a wire rack
  • These biscuits store well in an airtight container for two or three days and make a lovely addition to school lunch boxes as Halloween approaches!
  • Serve with optional spider for extra scare power!
