How to make jam jar lanterns to bring some spooky light to your Halloween celebrations!

Homemade mason jar lanterns for Halloween.

Halloween in my house is an excuse to get ALL the candles out and start the sparkle and these jam jar lanterns seem like a good place to start. I’ve lost count of the number of jam jar lanterns we’ve made over the years, they appear in the Spring, at Easter, Halloween and Christmas and we’ve decorated them in a thousand different ways. We usually use recycled jam jars which is what you can see here but I know my American readers are very fond of using mason jars for crafts so here’s a good way to use them! I’ve had this piece of black lacy fabric in the craft box crying out for a project for a while now but you could also use old stockings for the same effect.

To Make Halloween Jam Jar Lanterns You Will Need

  • Old jam jars, washed and dried or nice new mason preserving jars (you don’t need the lids for this craft)
  • PVA glue (aka white glue, school glue or Elmer’s Glue)
  • Black lace fabric or old stocking
  • Ribbon
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Silver glitter

  • Coat the jar with a thin layer of PVA glue
  • Cut a piece of fabric to fit your jar to the shoulders, wrap it around the jar and press into place. Leave to dry
  • Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to wrap around the neck of the jar, glue into place at the top of your fabric
  • Paint the rim of the jar (the screw thread bit) with black acrylic paint and allow to dry
  • Brush a thin layer of glue onto the dried paint and dip into silver glitter, allow to dry

These lanterns look fabulously spooky with a tealight candle popped inside

If you are worried about candles with small children they also look pretty good with glow sticks inside!
